Anarchism is a theory that demands action towards the destruction of capitalism and the state. This can be undertaken in any number of different ways from building stronger communities through co-ops, collective houses, and community gardens to protests. Regardless of what tactics and strategies individual anarchists and anarchist groups choose, organizing is at the center of anarchist activity.

In that spirit, here are some helpful resources on anarchist organizing:

ACTIVATE “How To” Guides

ACTIVATE was an anarchist/anti-authoritarian group active in Grand Rapids from 2006-2008. Its website still has a number of locally focused “how to” guides that can help you organize various events:

Anarchism in Action: Methods, Tactics, Skills, and Ideas

This website is a booklet that offers a number of ideas and helpful tips for anarchists looking to get active. Check it out at http://aia.mahost.org/

Recipes for Disaster: An Anarchist Cookbook

This book—published by Crimethinc–is a collection of 62 “recipes” covering a wide variety of tactics and projects. You can order it online–it’s well worth the $10 price.

An Anarchist Organizing Manual

This booklet was published by a South African anarchist collective but it provides some basic information about how to form an anarchist group or collective.

Organizing Tools for Addressing Privilege

The anti-authoritarian collective Colours of Resistance has an excellent collection of materials aimed at helping anarchists and radicals deal with issues of privilege and to help them develop strong anti-racist analyses. Check out their “Organizing Tools” for the resources.
